Working under the guidance of the Clinical Nurse Manager and Unit Charge RN, you will design and implement programs that help reduce stress, promote social and emotional growth, and enhance the overall well-being of patients.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Program Development and Implementation
    • Plan and organize structured activities tailored to the developmental, psychosocial, and intellectual needs of pediatric patients.
    • Create a daily schedule that provides a therapeutic environment, helping children and adolescents cope with illness and hospitalization.
  2. Team Collaboration
    • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to develop and execute activity programs.
    • Provide support and training to Behavioral Health Staff (BHS) on organizing and conducting activities.
  3. Crisis Management
    • Utilize safe and effective crisis management techniques to handle challenging behaviors and ensure the safety of all patients and staff.
    • Remain calm and make quick, rational decisions during crises to maintain a therapeutic environment.
  4. Patient Support and Engagement
    • Build therapeutic rapport with patients and their families, showing empathy, compassion, and a nonjudgmental attitude.
    • Guide and monitor patients during activities, providing encouragement and support to promote their social and emotional growth.
  5. Documentation and Feedback
    • Observe and document patient participation and behavior during activities.
    • Provide daily feedback to the charge RN regarding any changes in patient behavior or issues within the therapeutic milieu.
  6. Innovation and Improvement
    • Take initiative to suggest and implement innovative changes that enhance the quality of care and the therapeutic environment.
    • Continuously seek ways to improve activity programs and overall patient experience.

Required Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree: A bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field is required. This could include fields such as psychology, social work, or related areas.
  • Internal Candidates: Must hold a position of Behavioral Health Specialist II or higher for role consideration.

Experience:

  • Direct Childcare Experience: Six months to one year of direct childcare work with similar populations is required.
  • Certification:
    • Current Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Skills:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with children, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong ability to plan, organize, and execute therapeutic activities.
  • Crisis Management: Proficient in handling crises using de-escalation techniques.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Demonstrates an understanding of trauma and a compassionate attitude towards patients and their families.

  • Physical Stamina: Capable of lifting up to fifty pounds, bending, squatting, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

  • Safety Protocols: Knowledge of safety care practices to handle psychiatrically impaired, suicidal, or aggressive individuals.
  • Therapeutic Techniques: Ability to organize and implement therapeutic activities that support patient care.
  • Documentation Skills: Proficient in documenting patient behaviors and activity participation accurately.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve therapeutic goals.

Physical Requirements

This role involves both physical and mental demands to ensure the safety and well-being of patients:

  • Work Environment: Primarily works in a psychiatric setting with some remote communication through virtual meetings. Occasional time in the office may be required for meetings and training.
