This role is vital in maintaining and improving instrumentation and control systems to ensure that production, quality, and safety goals are met. The Controls Engineer will also manage development and sustaining programs for controls and electrical technicians, ensuring that systems remain reliable, secure, and up-to-date.

Key Responsibilities

1. Control and Manufacturing Systems Design

  • Design and support control and manufacturing execution systems.
  • Ensure the smooth functioning of company-wide systems and act as a key resource for operational systems.
  • Propose, design, and implement algorithms to support continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.

2. Automation and Feasibility Studies

  • Conduct feasibility studies for automation, evaluating practicality and ROI.
  • Develop control algorithms for both discrete and analog processes and implement them.

3. System Security and Redundancy

  • Ensure the integrity and security of control and information systems, implementing backup protocols.
  • Document and standardize systems for consistency and quality assurance.

4. Technical Support and Training

  • Provide operation, maintenance, and technical support/training to production and maintenance teams.
  • Manage multiple projects with overlapping tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.

Required Skills and Experience

1. Technical Experience

  • 1-2 years of hands-on controls and instrumentation experience, particularly in packaging improvement projects.
  • Experience in high-speed packaging lines and the food industry preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GMP practices, sanitary design, and OSHA regulations is a plus.

2. Engineering and Project Management

  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound engineering principles to packaging design and high-volume product development.
  • Proven success in leading continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, TPM, or WCM methodologies.

3. System Proficiency

  • Familiarity with Wonderware System Platform & InTouch, Allen Bradley PLC systems (PLC5, SLC500, ControlLogix), and associated I/O systems.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage time and resources efficiently.

Educational Requirements

  • Degree: Associate’s degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Led internal project teams and oversaw contractors on assigned projects, ensuring efficient operations and timely completion.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to work effectively with peers, plant operating staff, and engineering teams.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with a quick response to minimize system failures.
  • High level of initiative, creativity, and independence in carrying out tasks.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Pay Range

  • The Controls Engineer position offers a competitive salary range of $69,500 – $115,500, based on qualifications and experience.
