Join the Early Childhood and Perinatal (ECAP) Mental Health Program at Alberta Health Services as a Family Counsellor. In this position, you will be providing critical services to families with young children and pregnant women experiencing mental health challenges. You will have the opportunity to work with infants, preschoolers, and adults, improving mental health through therapy, counseling, and intervention strategies.
Job Description
As a Family Counsellor, your role will involve providing assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for families and individuals. Your responsibilities include:
- Assessing the mental health and development of young children and families.
- Delivering therapy sessions to support healthy parent-child relationships and emotional well-being.
- Implementing evidence-based interventions such as Circle of Security, Theraplay, and others.
- Supporting families through the perinatal and post-partum period, focusing on trauma-informed care.
- Collaborating with community services and healthcare providers to offer a continuum of care for families.

Key Responsibilities
Therapeutic Support for Families and Children
- Provide individual and family therapy for parents/caregivers and their children.
- Use relationship-based interventions to address mental health concerns in young children.
- Support families with behavioral issues like eating, sleeping, and sensory concerns.
Mental Health Assessment and Diagnosis
- Conduct psychosocial assessments for families, focusing on infants and preschoolers.
- Diagnose and provide therapeutic solutions for perinatal and post-partum mental health challenges.
Collaboration and Community Integration
- Work closely with other healthcare providers to coordinate mental health services.
- Engage in community-based programs that promote mental health awareness.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Skills and Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a health-related field.
- Active or eligible for registration with the applicable Alberta regulatory college.
- Expertise in family systems and early childhood mental health interventions.
Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in infant and children’s mental health.
- Professional experience applying trauma-informed care and relationship-based interventions.
- Knowledge and experience in perinatal mental health and related therapeutic models.
