Job Description

The Handicapped Student Attendant plays a critical role in helping handicapped students engage in educational activities. The attendant provides essential support for students’ mobility, personal care, and participation in classroom activities, ensuring that they have a safe, enriching experience during their school day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with Mobility: Aid students in moving between locations, including to and from transportation.
  • Personal Hygiene Support: Ensure the student’s hygiene and assist with dressing, eating, and drinking.
  • Supervision: Supervise students during recess, lunch breaks, and recreational periods to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Educational Support: Assist the teacher in delivering basic educational activities and communicating concepts of cleanliness and self-care.
  • Behavioral Observations: Record observations related to the student’s needs, behavior, and progress. Communicate with teachers and parents regarding the student’s education plan (IEP).
  • Additional Support: Provide additional help as needed for any related activities or tasks within the classroom environment.

Desired Profile

Education & Experience

  • Education:
    • Hold a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in Assistance in Health Care Facilities, or
    • Hold a Secondary School Diploma or an equivalent recognized diploma.
  • Experience:
    • One (1) year of experience in a related field, demonstrating the ability to work with students and apply general psychology concepts and human relations skills.

Certifications

  • First Aid: Hold a Standard First Aid Certificate (8-hour course) and a Refresher Course (6-hour duration) obtained within the last 3 years.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluent in French and English (both written and spoken).

Job Requirements

  • Experience: At least 1 year of relevant experience working in a student support role.
  • Educational Requirements: Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) or equivalent.
  • First Aid Certification: A valid and recent first-aid certificate.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in both French and English.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with students, parents, and staff.
    • Ability to manage challenging situations with patience and understanding.
    • Strong organizational skills to assist with various school activities and tasks.
