Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership and Mentorship
- Led and mentored less experienced engineers, guiding complex system-level problems.
- Manage functional requirements, risk assessments, and system specifications to ensure high-quality product development.
2. System Engineering Management
- Develop and manage system functional requirement specifications and traceability using requirement management tools (e.g., DOORS NG or Visure).
- Participate in defect tracking and resolution, ensuring issues are handled promptly and efficiently.
3. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with R&D and other departments to ensure product development adheres to regulatory and quality standards.
- Lead efforts to ensure the system design meets both hardware and software requirements for usability and safety.
4. Testing and Validation
- Identify test cases and write verification test protocols for both software and hardware.
- Conduct usability verification/validation using both manual and automated methods.
- Occasionally coordinate specialized engineering tasks, including HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing).
5. Risk Management
- Lead risk assessment efforts for both new designs and existing products.
- Ensure compliance with standards such as IEC 14971 (risk management), IEC 60601 (safety and performance), and ISO 13485 (quality systems).
6. Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution
- Use a systematic approach to troubleshoot system-level problems and apply failure analysis techniques to resolve issues effectively.
Skills and Qualifications
Required Skills
- Systems Engineering: Experience in developing and validating complex electro-mechanical systems.
- Medical Devices: At least 5 years of experience in the medical device industry, particularly with energy-based delivery devices.
- Risk Management: Expertise in EN 14971, EN IEC 60601-1/-2, and ISO 13485.
- Collaboration: Strong communication and team collaboration skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
- Project Management: Experience with project planning tools like MS Project and using defect tracking tools such as JIRA.
Preferred Skills
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with FDA Quality System Regulations and Design Control requirements.
- Usability Engineering: Experience with EN IEC 62366 for usability testing.
- Clinical Experience: Knowledge of preclinical and clinical studies and evaluations.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Experience: At least 10 years of experience in systems engineering, with at least 5 years in the medical device or related field.
