The Sensory Scientist at McCain Foods will utilize sensory and consumer research methodologies to support Product Development teams in the innovation process. This key role collaborates with cross-functional teams, guides sensory testing, and provides actionable insights to optimize McCain’s product development and ensure product quality.

Key Responsibilities

1. Sensory and Consumer Research

  • Apply sensory research methodologies to assist in product development and improvement.
  • Design and lead sensory and consumer testing to ensure product optimization and innovation success.
  • Use statistical analysis to translate sensory data into actionable insights that guide product development.

2. Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Partner with teams such as Product Development, Consumer Insights, Marketing, and Packaging to influence product design and quality.
  • Work with various stakeholders to facilitate product testing from early stages through to final optimization and confirmatory testing.

3. Product Optimization and Quality Control

  • Ensure product quality standards are maintained throughout the development and improvement phases.
  • Support the identification and integration of key product attributes (KPAs) to ensure product success.

4. Training and Best Practices

  • Provide training to stakeholders on sensory best practices and testing methods.
  • Lead efforts to standardize and optimize sensory tools and methods across the global team.

5. Vendor Management

  • Develop strong relationships with sensory and consumer testing vendors to ensure high-quality testing and accurate results.
  • Manage costs and timelines for external sensory testing, ensuring projects stay on track.

6. Reporting and Recommendations

  • Create detailed reports based on research findings and provide clear recommendations to business teams.
  • Present data in an understandable manner to both technical and non-technical teams to facilitate data-driven decision-making.

Required Qualifications and Experience

1. Educational Background

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree is a plus.

2. Experience

  • A minimum of 4 years of sensory and consumer research experience (or 2 years with a Master’s degree).
  • Experience in planning and executing sensory and consumer research studies is essential.
  • Proficient in applied statistical analysis, including experimental design and multivariate techniques.

  • Deep knowledge of sensory science and its application in product development.
  • Ability to apply the design of experiments and sensory testing methods in real-world scenarios.

  • Capable of fostering collaboration within teams and across departments.

3. Project Management

  • Ability to manage resources, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Experience in managing external relationships with sensory vendors and suppliers.

  • A scientific mindset with the ability to think critically and solve complex sensory challenges.
  • Ability to adapt to change and engage in continuous learning and innovation.

Work Environment and Travel

The Sensory Scientist will be part of McCain’s Global Research & Development team. This position requires about 20% travel for on-site testing and vendor management. The role offers the opportunity to influence McCain’s global sensory capabilities and collaborate across various business units.
